I put it on the forum calendar.

General Discussion / Re: member input - blogging?

from the fount of knowledge and accuracy (wikipedia)
A blog (a contraction of the words web log)  is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries ("posts") typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first)...
A majority are interactive, allowing visitors to leave comments and even message each other via GUI widgets on the blogs, and it is this interactivity that distinguishes them from other static websites.
Many blogs provide commentary on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries; others function more as online brand advertising of a particular individual or company. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important contribution to the popularity of many blogs.

I use the term blog loosely here. A good example of how I see it being used would be what AtomicXRer and others have done on advrider. They have a continuing thread that they add content to which is sorta kinda like a blog. We should take back the term flog!
Anyway, a flog could be your adventures in the desert near Rio Rancho - Ditch in the Desert. You periodically add content and it just exists on the site without ever moving down, and out of sight. The other advantage is that you wouldn't really need to write a full-blown ride report every time you post. A picture and a few sentences and your done. I think when you see it in action, you'd buy into it.
Have you ever spent a few hours compiling a ride report and then post it on advrider? Two days later it's pushed 5 pages back and it's never seen again. That sucks. This site doesn't have the traffic that adv has but the low traffic site can have a similar effect by not being seen by the occasional viewer, imo.

General Discussion / member input - blogging?

One of the tweaks I've been mulling over is whether or not we should have a blog board. This was one of the things that I felt would be a nice feature for the site.

The forum software isn't really designed for "official" blogging, where the person has complete control over their content (as you would if you were a mod or admin),  but it would be a spot where you could chronicle your adventures. Basically, it would be your thread under a board named Blogs.

IMO, people spend a lot of time writing their reports and take a bit of pride in having it viewed and commented on. With the typical forum format, as time does by, their work gets pushed farther down until it drops off the page. Having your own thread would be a way of keeping your work a bit more visible. All I ask is that you cross post it.

It's an easy tweak for me to add this. How about some feedback?

Mapping and GPS tips / Forest Service Maps
« on: October 02, 2013, 06:19:46 AM »
Here's a link to the FS Southwest Region maps.

from their site...
The US Forest Service Southwestern Region Cartography unit has developed this website to provide users with georeferenced* MVUMs in .pdf format. There is no fee for this service, other than fees incurred by the end user on their mobile device associated with services such as internet access, app fees, data transfer fees, etc. In those cases the end user, not the USFS, is responsible for those fees.
*Note that only main maps have been georeferenced. Other maps such as insets or detail views have not been georeferenced.

Once downloaded, the MVUM can be used for navigation and reference on a mobile device out in the field, or wherever needed.

Posting Tips / Video Embedding
« on: September 08, 2013, 07:43:51 AM »
Luckily, YouTube interfaces with this forum pretty good so this tutorial is brief. I'm going to skip over the part about how to get a youtube account in the first place but there's plenty of info on that on their site.
  • From, there is a series of links that appear below the video and one of them is called Share, select that.
  • By default the Share this video is already selected and below it is a line of code that is highlighted in blue. Copy that.
  • On this forum (in your post), all you need to do is paste that code somewhere in your post and it should now embed it.
There are other ways of sharing videos too, but this is the simple way.

Posting Tips / Picture Embedding

Here's a good video on how to post pictures on the forum. This fellow is using Photobucket but other picture hosting sites are similar. The main thing is to use the code that has the image tags surrounding it. imgyour picture link information img

One thing to remember with these photo hosting sites is that you are linking back to them. That means that if you decide to reorganize you photobucket picture folders, you change the code. This will cause your pictures to disappear on this site. Take some time to configure your folders the way you want them.

All sales and trades are "buyer beware". Perform your due diligence, this forum is not responsible for these transactions.
Report any concerns to me and I'll look into it.

I'm going to periodically remove old posts (haven't determined the interval yet). Putting a comment that the item was sold will help me a lot.  ;D
  • A price is helpful.
  • Pictures are a good idea.
  • Forum related sales only. No guns, drugs etc...

By request, I added Tapatalk to the forum. I don't use it so if you folks could test it and see if it works, that would be great.

Looks good on the desktop, any plan to support tapatalk for mobile?

I'll look into it, I think I saw a mod to add that. As long as the security risk is minimal, I'm ok with adding mods to the site. Right now, it's running with minimal mods (youtube and simpleportal). I've seen some mods that have some Google+,Facebook and other social media add ons. Anyone like that stuff?

How does the site appear on your browsers? Too dark? Too...?
If you see any weird things let me know. I was looking at the site from a different computer and it seemed really dark so I'm looking for some comments  from the users to better understand if there is tweaking needed,

I've been tweaking the site a little bit. Added a mod package to allow for easier video embedding. I added some of the more popular video sites like YouTube, Vimeo, Google Vids and so on. YouTube works fine as does Vimeo. The others, I haven't tried yet. Let me know how it works for you.
