Dealing with the company that hosts this web site has me contemplating starting a Google Community with a similar theme as this site, maybe expanding it to a region. I'm not really that familiar with the GC but from what I've been seeing, it seems like it could coexist with this site and possibly replace it down the road. It appears to have all the basic stuff you'd want for discussing rides, posting up trips and general chatter and expanding it to a region could be a benefit, I believe. The traffic on this site has been dwindling down to a trickle and GC would be perfect for small volume content. Being under the Google umbrella might be a good thing for users too instead of trying to deal with the peculiarities that forums sometimes have.
Snooping around, I looked for some comparable sites and didn't see anything that wasn't world oriented, very narrow, or designed to pimp products.

I'd like to hear from people that use GC and can explain the negatives to me.

I've added a site modification that allows users to log in using their other social site credentials. You might see it and wonder what it is all about. The only one that currently works is google+ but more will be added - like facebook. We'll give it a test drive and see how it works.

Update. Facebook Wordpress and youtube are added too.  ;)

Basically this is helpful for new users to register quicker so they don't have to rely on manual approval. Hopefully, the uptick in miscreants signing up will be minimal.
Current users can use it too but your email address would need to match what you have on file (in this site).

Just a bit of information regarding to off and on status of the web site. The web host has been a bit flakey since the weekend and it's has caused this site and others to not load. Fear not, they are diligently working on a fix!  ::)

Beginning at 1am Eastern time, we will be carrying out planned maintenance on our file systems. This may lead to downtime for some customers' websites, potentially lasting up to an hour. This maintenance is intended to address the intermittent issues recently impacting customer sites.
We will update this alert when the maintenance has been completed; we are sorry for any resulting inconvenience, and appreciate your ongoing patience as we work towards a permanent resolution.

So, the fee's for the site renewal are coming up in a few days and I'm asking you folks, is it worth keeping it going? Managing it is a painless affair so I'm not whining about that. I'm just wondering if it's providing any value for the members? With all the websites out there, does this site have value?
Lately the post count has been pretty much nothing but the shoutbox is getting action. That makes me think that the main contributors are not riding or not interested. I know I have no reports to share and geo isn't riding much.

Just looking for some opinions.


Forum News / Enhanced Registration Process

Periodically, the site has been targeted by a-holes from other countries attempting to register as members.  So far this has been just a minor inconvenience but I hate spam!  :-X One evening, an industrious person registered 80+ times. lol

Anyway, the registration process is being handled by yours truly on a case by case basis and if the IP appears funny or otherwise make my spidey senses tingle, they get denied. Unfortunately this may impact legitimate members from joining but I'll do my best to filter those people through. If you know of anybody getting denied just let me know.

General Discussion / member input - blogging?

One of the tweaks I've been mulling over is whether or not we should have a blog board. This was one of the things that I felt would be a nice feature for the site.

The forum software isn't really designed for "official" blogging, where the person has complete control over their content (as you would if you were a mod or admin),  but it would be a spot where you could chronicle your adventures. Basically, it would be your thread under a board named Blogs.

IMO, people spend a lot of time writing their reports and take a bit of pride in having it viewed and commented on. With the typical forum format, as time does by, their work gets pushed farther down until it drops off the page. Having your own thread would be a way of keeping your work a bit more visible. All I ask is that you cross post it.

It's an easy tweak for me to add this. How about some feedback?
